Embossed
Embossed is an ongoing series inspired by sea life in all it’s amazing and unbelievable beauty and strangeness. I explore the possibilities of creating contemporary wearables utilising the ancient metalsmithing craft of chasing and repoussé. These wearable stories evolved through the mindful practise of this technique, creating relief designs by hammering pliable metal on a soft surface called pitch. Repoussé is the technique of pushing metal out (emboss) from the back and chasing is the refining, detailing work from the front, which defines the design.
Stories that lie on the ocean bed washed up on the beach, hidden in the flotsam and jetsam of marine debris, treasures waiting to be discovered. My love of the ocean and marine life began at a young age and the ritual of combing the shore for hidden treasures has become a lifelong passion. To share my interpretation of nature and its beauty has become more urgent as climate change threatens our oceans ecosystems.
Each piece is made from sterling silver and was created by the repetitive tapping of my tools on a pliable surface, producing light voluminous forms with intriguing textures. These sculptural works are treasures to hold, to explore, to become familiar with. They contain memories held close to the body, to pass on, to cherish.
