Melinda Capp
Over the past decade, Melinda Capp has focused on experimenting with various metals to create art jewellery and small sculptures, sometimes incorporating other materials and found objects.
Capp’s area of exploration is seen through the lens of being an identical twin and like the patterning on fingerprints and iris’s (expressions of difference in each twin), she is drawn to the unique patterns and forms in the natural world.
A fascination with patterns and replication is expressed in her main practice, using the ancient metal craft of chasing and repousse, stories of beautiful, fragile marine life are told. These artworks have a tangible, tactile quality, acting as a conduit between the viewer and the wearer, adorning the body in the form of contemporary wearables.
Research and experimentation are a fundamental part of the process. Developing designs and technical skills as a metalsmith and refining concepts behind the artwork, build on and consolidate her practice.
The techniques of Chasing and repousse are used to create volume and form, patterns and textures. The jewellery becomes more than an adornment, it is an object with physicality and presence. Sterling silver is the main material used to create her work, which play with the notion of preciousness and value.
